Description:

Portal is a first person puzzle-platformer game where main character Chell navigates trough different test chambers of research facility Aperture Science by completing a series of tasks while receiving feedback from GLaDOS (Genetic Lifeform and Disk Operating System), a computer artificial intelligence. Chell must use the Portal Gun to navigate within chambers, which become increasingly difficult as she advances. Players therefore need to develop an understanding of how portals work and approach problems critically. As the game develops, we find out more about Aperture Science and GLaDOS’ character becomes increasingly disturbing. The game’s visuals suggest a sterile environment, which creates a slight anguish for the player.
Despite GLaDOS’ darkness, Portal is a lighthearted game and the computer’s intentions do not dominate the player’s experience. Moreover, the game requires players to apply their knowledge of physics and gravity in order to advance.

Why the library should carry it:
Portal is an excellent example of games that can be both entertaining and educational. It can be used to introduce or reinforce certain principles about gravity but also encourages critical thinking by requiring players to solve puzzles while dealing with GLaDOS’ dissuasive nature.
